Malum Review | Maybe rebooting wasn't a good idea

When "Last Shift" came out, it took a bit to get a following but since it's release in 2014, it is one of those horror films that is talked about in the horror community and geeked over. But in 2023, writer/director Anthony DiBlasi of "Last Shift" decided to reviews the film and present it under a new direction. Sometimes, though, diverting from the original script doesn't pay off all that well.

What makes "Malum" feel uneven is the changes to the original story, even though a lot of it feels the same, the new additions try to take the mythology to a new place but feels unexplained and far fetched. Also, the additions to the scares originally seen in "Last Shift" do not come off as scary as intended and you tend to find yourself chuckling or looking at the screen in confusion and that really hurts the film's re-watchability factor.

If you are a fan, devoted or casual, of the original then you will find yourself preferring the original. If you are a casual movie go-er, you will find the film pretty generic in its attempt to establish scares and leave you wondering "why?" to a lot of the plot being presented. Overall, it is best to stick to "Last Shift" when recommending either one of these films.

Malum can be seen on Amazon Prime.

Last shift is also available on Blu-Ray.
