THE ALBUM
Iowa is Slipknot's second studio album, released August 28, 2001 on Roadrunner Records. Twenty-five years later it is still the band's heaviest and bleakest record. Ross Robinson, who also produced Korn's debut, co-produced it with the band. They made it under heavy pressure after the success of their 1999 self-titled debut, and the band has described that period as the darkest of their career.
It was the first full album to feature guitarist Jim Root, who appeared on only two songs of the debut. The title comes from the band's home state, which the members have long cited as a major source of inspiration.
Where the debut mixed aggression with hooks, Iowa pushes toward extreme metal: relentless drumming, down-tuned riffing, and Corey Taylor's most ferocious vocals. People = Shit, Disasterpiece, My Plague, The Heretic Anthem, and Left Behind are the tracks fans still talk about, and the title track closes the record at over fifteen minutes.
