THE ALBUM
─────────────────────────────────
Danzig I is the self-titled debut from Glenn Danzig's project — released in 1988 on Def American Recordings, Rick Rubin's label, after the dissolution of Samhain and years before that of the Misfits. It was the convergence of everything Glenn had been building: the horror punk of the Misfits, the gothic weight of Samhain, and his own deep blues obsession — fused into something that sounded unlike either predecessor and heavier than both.
Rick Rubin produced. Chuck Biscuits — who had drummed for Black Flag, DOA, and Circle Jerks before joining Danzig — played drums. The production is clean and massive: every instrument placed with deliberate space, Glenn's baritone commanding the center of every track.
Mother is track six on Side A. It became the most recognized song on the album years after release — appearing on Beavis and Butt-Head in 1993 and subsequently charting, five years after the album was recorded. The other nine tracks are not footnotes: Twist of Cain opens the album without apology. Am I Demon is its heaviest moment. She Rides and Soul on Fire carry the blues influence most directly. Evil Thing closes Side B.
This Indie Exclusive pressing on white vinyl was released May 29, 2026 through American Recordings — available only through independent record stores and select retail partners. White vinyl for a debut that was never trying to be clean.
