Released in 1992, Burzum is the self-titled debut from the one-man Norwegian black metal project created by Varg Vikernes, recording under the alias Count Grishnackh. The album arrived in the first, most turbulent wave of Norwegian black metal — the same period that produced Darkthrone's A Blaze in the Northern Sky, Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, and Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse — and it occupies a distinct position within that era. Where its contemporaries leaned into speed and aggression, Burzum was slower, more atmospheric, and more interior: distorted guitars buried under reverb, vocals processed into something closer to a shriek from deep inside a cave, and long instrumental passages that prioritized mood over riffs.

The album's influence proved generational. It is widely credited as a primary source for Blackgaze — the fusion of black metal with shoegaze that produced Deafheaven, Alcest, and Lantlôs — and has been cited by bands including Dimmu Borgir, Ghost Bath, Wolves in the Throne Room, and Xasthur as formative. Whatever critical or ethical position a listener holds toward the project, Burzum's place in the documented history of black metal and its downstream genres is not disputed.
