The Dark is Chelsea Wolfe's ninth studio album, released August 21, 2026, through Loma Vista Recordings. It arrived four days ago and it is already being received as one of the most significant records of her career.
Written alongside longtime collaborator Ben Chisholm and songwriter Jennifer Decilveo (Hozier, Bat for Lashes), the album was shaped by what Wolfe described as a period of becoming "the darkest thing in the woods" — moving through darkness rather than away from it. The writing came quickly and with unusual directness, channeling mysticism, memory, grief, and desire into ten tracks that feel both heavier and more intimate than anything she has made before.
The collaborator list reads like a dispatch from the outer edges of rock: Robin Finck and Justin Meldal-Johnsen from Nine Inch Nails, Troy Van Leeuwen from Queens of the Stone Age, Matt Chamberlain from Pearl Jam, and Stella Mozgawa from Warpaint all appear across the record. Lead single Cold opens the album as an icily strummed ballad that builds into a piano-driven dirge. The Dark and Death Is Not the End were released as dual singles on June 23. Dancer in the Sky closes it.
