THE ALBUM

Danzig II: Lucifuge was released in 1990 on Def American Recordings — the second album from Glenn Danzig's project, following the self-titled debut, and the second collaboration with producer Rick Rubin. Where Danzig I established the blueprint — heavy metal weight, blues underpinning, gothic atmosphere — Lucifuge refined it. The production is tighter, the performances more assured, and the songs more fully realized. Glenn's baritone is at its most controlled and most commanding simultaneously.
Chuck Biscuits returned on drums. John Christ on guitar. Eerie Von on bass. The same lineup that recorded the debut, now locked in.
Her Black Wings is the album's defining track — a slow-building, riff-driven statement that became one of the most recognizable songs in the Danzig catalog and a live staple for over three decades. Long Way Back from Hell opens Side A without apology. Killer Wolf and Devil's Plaything carry the blues-metal synthesis at its most direct. 777 and Blood and Tears round out Side B with the album's darkest moments. Pain in the World closes it.
The title Lucifuge references Lucifuge Rophocale — a figure in the Grand Grimoire, said to be the minister of Hell who flees light. The album's imagery and lyrics operate in that same theological underground, drawing from demonology and occult tradition rather than shock-value aesthetics.
