Mayhem's Deathcrush arrived in 1987 as one of the foundational recordings of Norwegian black metal — six tracks, under twenty minutes, with Euronymous on guitar, Necrobutcher on bass, Manheim on drums, and vocalist Maniac, with Messiah of Candlemass guesting on "Carnage." The EP's cover image became as foundational as the music. It is one of the most recognized images in extreme metal history, and it has never looked more deliberately subversive than it does on a racerback dress.
