Mayhem's Deathcrush arrived in 1987 as one of the first recordings to define what Norwegian black metal would sound like — six tracks, under twenty minutes, produced with Euronymous, Necrobutcher, Manheim, and vocalist Maniac. The EP's cover became as foundational as the music. It is one of the most recognized images in extreme metal history, and it has never looked more deliberately subversive than it does on a dress.
