Aske — Norwegian for "Ashes" — is the sole EP from Burzum, the one-man black metal project of Varg Vikernes (recording as Count Grishnackh). Recorded in April and August 1992 and released in March 1993 on Cymophane Productions, it sits between the self-titled debut and Det Som Engang Var in the project's early catalog and shares their atmosphere: suffocatingly feral, with distorted guitars processed into something more texture than riff, and vocals that garble any literal meaning in favor of a single sustained mood — what the music communicates is sadness as a kind of dread.
The EP features Samoth of Emperor on bass — one of the few documented collaborations between musicians from this era of Norwegian black metal, and a detail that collectors of both bands specifically seek out.
The cover image is a photograph of the remains of Fantoft Stave Church in Bergen, Norway, burned in June 1992. The image was connected to Vikernes and contributed to his arrest in 1993. The original 1993 pressing of the first 1000 copies famously included a cigarette lighter with the cover image. This Back on Black Records repressing does not include the lighter — it is a faithful reissue of the record itself in the original format.
